Exam Rhythm

This last Friday, I spent the majority of my night writing about this painting. You doubtless would not need to know the year or title to guess who made it, as its by the famed artist of Abstract Expressionism himself, Jackson Pollock. The essay I wrote was the first essay exam I’ve written since last December (in English, at least)… so it was a little painful to eek it out of me.

And that’s to say the least.

But I came to realize that night, writing about art is just awesome. In addition to making it, criticizing it, breathing it, sleeping it, eating it, wearing it, swimming in it….

I could go on and on, really.

I love modern art. Whether or not you love it or hate it, it is attention grabbing and thought provoking. Regardless of if its political or apolitical, minimal or messy, loud or quiet nature, you can’t deny its presence.

This painting is Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm, painted in 1950. Its lyrical paint drips in overlapping black and white make this one of my personal favorites by Pollock. In the end, staying up all night to write an art history paper isn’t so bad. It can re-inspire creative blocks, and reawaken the artistic imagination.

Maybe, just maybe, I appreciate the late night in favor of some new perspectives.

As much as I don’t want to admit it.

Stay inspired, my friends, by whatever turns you on.
